In recent years, Internet has become an inescapable interface between the public and the health community. What do we know about this tool and the information it conveys and what do we do with it? These are the questions this new dossier addresses.
How does Internet as a source of health information differ from other sources of information? How do we use online health information? Should we worry about the quality of health information we find on the Internet? Is access to Internet becoming a citizen’s right or a digital imperative? Pascale Lehoux discusses these questions and more with Sally Wyatt, Professor of digital cultures in development at Maastricht University, Netherlands.

Even if video game or Internet addiction is a new and undefined trend, many parents show some form of preoccupation. Indeed, computers have been introduced quite rapidly in most of our homes and it is not uncommon to see that children are more familiar with it then their parents. They can be quickly overwhelmed and feel concerned about the number of hours their children spend in front of the Internet or a video game. But what exactly do we call cyberaddiction? Is Internet and video game addiction a new behavioural disorder? And when do we start to worry?

According to Kimberly Young, a psychologist who did some studies on the impact of the Internet, one person out of eight in the United States may suffer from Internet addiction. In this interview, Dr. Young gives her opinion on this new form of addiction. She explains how people can be addicted to the Internet and what are the treatments offered in the center she founded a few years ago.

In the last few years, there has been a lot of discussion surrounding the use of “smart chips” or “smart tags”, more precisely known as radiofrequency identification tags or RFID. Actually, RFID has been around for awhile. It was deployed originally by the British military in the1940s to assist in the identification of friendly versus enemy aircraft. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the need for security surrounding the use of nuclear materials drove further development of RFID tagging of equipment and personnel.

In this interview, Emily Hamilton, senior VP of clinical research at PeriGen presents how technology can address these challenges and create a safety net with tools that can assist clinicians in decision-making. She also presents the results obtained when using these tools and what are the next steps in her research activities.
