Lauren discusses the positive impact on the UK government policy of the Alzheimer100 project in which designers adopted a co-design approach with people with dementia and their carers to generate novel ideas regarding the delivery of dementia care.

Rembourser ou non les médicaments pour le cancer : où se cache «l’humain» au juste?

Comme bien d’autres, j’ai été surprise de la réaction du ministre de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec, Yves Bolduc, suite au refus de l’Institut national d’excellence en santé et en services sociaux (INESSS) d’ajouter certains médicaments pour le cancer à la liste des médicaments remboursables par la RAMQ. Cette réaction du ministre est peut-être plus étonnante encore du fait qu’elle aille dans le même sens que celle d’un groupe de lobby comme la Coalition Priorité Cancer du Québec.

Recadrer l’autisme. Intervenir moins et comprendre mieux?

Dans un article publié dans Nature, le psychiatre et chercheur Laurent Mottron invite ses collègues à adopter une autre façon de percevoir l’autisme. Au lieu d’y voir des déficits que les scientifiques devraient s’atteler à expliquer, il suggère plutôt de considérer l’autisme comme l’expression de variations génétiques au sein de l’espèce humaine. Ces variations ont des conséquences positives et négatives, souligne-t-il, mais il faut cesser de les réduire à des erreurs de la nature qui devraient être nécessairement corrigées.

This is what Deborah Cohen (2011), an investigations editor for the British Medical Journal, shows in her story of a regulatory failure, one in which DePuy —a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson—finally recalled its ASR hip prostheses in August 2010. Her detailed analysis draws our attention on three issues we might take for granted.

Most of us rely on the media to learn about scientific innovations and breakthroughs. Where health is concerned, the media are often accused of looking for sensational stories, presenting incomplete, unbalanced, uncritical or misleading information. Yet, scientific journals and experts constitute, by and large, the main source of information for science journalists. Would it not be possible that misleading conclusions in the media stem, at least in part, from misrepresentation of data in scientific papers?

Ces dernières années, la santé publique a déployé beaucoup d’efforts pour documenter les aspects négatifs du jeu, du moins au Québec (Papineau, 2010). Chaque semaine, les médias publient un article, présentent un reportage ou une publicité sur les dangers de la dépendance aux jeux de hasard ou de la cyberdépendance aux jeux vidéo. L’équipe d’Hinnovic a aussi exploré ce phénomène.

Dans son article, paru dans UdeMNouvelles le 14 avril dernier, Marie Lambert-Chan rapporte les résultats d’une étude publiée dans The Journal of Pediatrics par des néonatalogistes d’un hôpital montréalais (Janvier, Barrington et Spelke, 2011). Les « grands bienfaits » ou la « pertinence » du programme québécois de remboursement de trois essais de fécondation in vitro tiendraient à la réduction des grossesses multiples et de leurs effets secondaires sur les bébés et leurs mères.

It is commonly understood that our health care system is struggling when it comes to the integration of health innovations. It is often claimed that we should seek to increase its so-called “receptor capacity.” Framing the issue in these terms is not only misleading, but it’s also illogical: How can one ask a tiny river like the one I used to swim in as a kid —la rivière à Simon— to redirect properly the whole Niagara Falls?

Soigner sans nuire ? Vers un système de santé plus écologique

Quand on pense aux hôpitaux ou plus globalement au système de santé, on pense à « soins », « guérison », « mieux-être ». Il ne nous vient pas spontanément à l’esprit que le système de santé et son infrastructure complexe puissent nuire à la santé. Pourtant, l’empreinte écologique des établissements de santé est tout aussi importante sinon plus que celle d’autres types d’industries.
